Ian Couwenberg rejoined Equity Residential in August of 2021 as West Coast VP to lead the firm’s acquisition activities in California and Texas.
Prior to rejoining EQR, Mr. Couwenberg served as Director of Acquisitions at Raintree Partners where he was directly involved in the acquisition of 940 units for a total consideration of $366.4 million. Mr. Couwenberg also served as Vice President of Acquisitions and Dispositions for Sack Properties overseeing their investment platform. During his time at Sack Properties, Mr. Couwenberg successfully oversaw the acquisition and disposition of 1,539 units for a total consideration of $382.2 million. Mr. Couwenberg started his career as an investment broker with CB Richard Ellis and subsequently worked with Archstone-Smith and Equity Residential. After handling acquisitions in Northern California for both REITs from 2007 through 2013, Mr. Couwenberg returned to Southern California to serve as Director of Investments for Southern California at Equity Residential. Since 2003, Mr. Couwenberg has been involved in the acquisition and disposition of 9,476 units throughout the Western US for a total consideration of $4.2 billion.
Mr. Couwenberg has served on the Emerging Leaders Committee and is currently involved with the Diversity Committee for the National Multi-Housing Council. He has also been a member of The Urban Land Institute of San Francisco and a past board member for the Alameda Housing Authority.
Mr. Couwenberg earned his Bachelor Degree in Finance with an emphasis in Real Estate at San Diego State University, served as a member of the SDSU Associated Student Business Council and was a founding member of the SDSU Real Estate Investment Society.
